The communities impacted by the War on Drugs should receive investments from the economic benefits of legalization - not those who enrich themselves off for-profit incarceration. . video via: @drugpolicyalliance
Happy to announce that I will be bringing Ana María Archila, the NY-14 resident who confronted Jeff Flake in the elevator ahead of the Kavanaugh vote, to the State Of The Union this year. . Her act of bravery elevated the stories of survivors across the country and had a profound impact, changing the vote’s proceedings and our national conversation around believing survivors. . Ana María is living proof that the courage that lies within each of us can change the world. 🌎
It was an honor to bring forward one of my constituent’s stories in my first-ever speech on the House Floor. In the moment, it often seems lonely and scary to speak out on these issues - especially in DC, which so deeply prizes conformity, “etiquette” in the form of learned silence, and falling in line. I feel a lot of pressure to conform, or not shine as brightly - and I also admit that a lot of that pressure is self-imposed. In DC it “feels” as though I shouldn’t say or do these things moreso than other contexts, because those feelings are reinforced by a culture that is very exact in who should be where on a totem pole. . The thing is, in two days this became the most-viewed CSPAN video of all time from a House member. It was a reminder that while moments like these can feel lonely (although not isolated - w/ friends like @rashidatlaib , @joe_neguse_for_colorado , @laurenaunderwood & others ), it is not because I am alone in these sentiments, but because some of our institutions have strayed from where the majority of Americans are. Feeling your support here and elsewhere truly helps me keep it up. Thank you - grateful as always for you all! . 📸: @credomobile
"Those women and children trying to come here with nothing but the shirts on their back to create an opportunity and provide for this nation are acting more in an American tradition than this president is right now." . We are not here to play around. My district send me to DC to fight for ALL working families in this country. And that’s what I sought to do last night.
